The role

Apply Job ID R124965 Location: London
White Collar Factory (95009), United Kingdom, London, London

Senior Security Architect

About this role:

Security is an integral part of our culture at Capital One UK. It is essential to maintaining our position as an industry leader in electronic payments, and it is the responsibility of each and every associate to safeguard information, protect it from unauthorised access, and ensure regulatory compliance. Information security has a significant effect on privacy, consumer confidence, external reputation, and it is a priority on everyone’s agenda.

Capital One UK is migrating all of its services to the cloud. This journey will take a number of years and during this transformation security needs to encompass both environments with no loss of capability.

The successful candidate will join the Cyber Consultancy and Architecture team, working mainly within the Capital One UK Division. Your primary focus will be to ensure that security is maintained and enhanced across both cloud and on-premise environments, and you will work with our Enterprise colleagues in North America to ensure that the UK line of business is able to consume new cyber capabilities as they become available through the global cyber program.

Working with groups such as Technology Engineering, Technology Operations, and Enterprise Architecture, this position will take a leading role in the development of the security for Capital One UK in relation to a multi-cloud and hybrid environment.

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure appropriate security tooling, security control parity, operational processes, patterns and roadmap are in place for on premise & cloud hosting environments in the UK.
  • Working with UK Cyber and Tech, identify areas of opportunity for control improvement and create target end states or roadmaps for change
  • Work with Enterprise projects to deliver secure, robust solutions that can be effectively delivered and maintained across the UK hybrid environment
  • Build on the existing great relationships between UK Cyber and its key stakeholders, to influence senior leaders in Tech and other functional areas to gain buy in for identified long-term architectural improvements
  • Provide cyber architecture subject matter expertise to stakeholders in the UK and North America
  • Leadership, coaching and mentoring of relevant stakeholders in Business, Technology and Cyber teams
  • Engage with vendors and external special interest groups to determine future direction
  • Work across UK Cyber to provide architectural support, with further opportunities available to be involved in short and longer term Cyber team projects as part of our cross-functional ‘Cyber Teamwork’ initiative

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience in a financial or highly regulated environment
  • Experience of designing or evaluating both on premise and cloud (ideally AWS) security controls
  • Ability to consume large amounts of information and produce clear, concise recommendations and architectural patterns for a variety of audiences
  • Proven ability to quickly build and maintain relationships both locally and internationally
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Any of these would be great (but we’d still love to hear from you if not):

  • Desirable: CISSP, CISM, CISA, CRISC, ISEB Certificate in Information Security Management Principles or equivalent experience
  • Desirable: Cloud certification, specifically AWS
  • ISO 27001, ITIL, COBIT, PCI DSS, GDPR, PSD II / SCA
  • Technical risk analysis, assessment and mitigation

What’s in it for you:

  • Bring us all this - and you’ll be handsomely rewarded with a role contributing to the product roadmap for an organisation committed to transformation
  • We are continuing our journey into the public cloud and have problems of scale, security, availability and performance for you to help solve
  • We love continuous learning and that’s why we give you 10% of your time to work on cutting edge innovative projects that shape the way we will work in the future
  • We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers)
  • Immediate access to our core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement and private medical insurance – with flexible benefits available including season-ticket loans, cycle to work scheme and enhanced parental leave
  • Open-plan workspaces and facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music room

Where and how you’ll work:

  • This is a permanent position and can be based in our Nottingham or London offices.  We’ve adopted a flexible hybrid working model - one that creates the opportunity to work in your own way, but also provides great spaces for in-person collaboration.
  • Our core in-the-office days are Tuesday to Thursday, but they aren't mandatory - you’ll be led by your team, the type of work you do and of course your preferences. Many of our team have flexible working patterns so we’re open to discuss flexible working arrangements with you.
  • You can read more about the full announcement from our Founder and CEO Rich Fairbank here: Update on CapitalOne.com
  • We are committed to creating a level playing field and seek to create teams that are representative of our customers and the communities we serve.  We’d love to hear from you if you identify with a typically under-represented group in our industry and are particularly keen to hear from women and ethnic minority candidates.

What you should know about how we recruit:

We pride ourselves on hiring the best people, not the same people. Building diverse and inclusive teams is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. We want to work with top talent: whoever you are, whatever you look like, wherever you come from. We know it’s about what you do, not just what you say. That’s why we make our recruitment process fair and accessible. And we offer benefits that attract people at all ages and stages.

We also partner with organisations including the Women in Finance and Race At Work Charters, Stonewall and upReach to find people from every walk of life and help them thrive with us. We have a whole host of internal networks and support groups you could be involved in, to name a few:

  • REACH – Race Equality and Culture Heritage group focuses on representation, retention and engagement for associates from minority ethnic groups and allies
  • OutFront – to provide LGBTQ+ support for all associates
  • Mind Your Mind – signposting support and promoting positive mental wellbeing for all
  • Women in Tech – promoting an inclusive environment in tech
  • EmpowHER - network of female associates and allies focusing on developing future leaders, particularly for female talent in our industry

Life at Capital One

We’re a financial services company with a tech mindset that runs throughout the business, setting us apart from others in the industry.

Are you the right fit?

  • You see opportunities to innovate and disrupt where others see obstacles and hurdles. You tell others how they can do something rather than telling them why they can’t.

  • You can convince, explain and reassure people at all levels, from business managers to developers.

  • You have an appetite to learn and enjoy the challenge of doing things that haven’t been done before (data streaming, machine learning). You apply rigorous engineering sense to deliver robust business servicing applications.

  • You’re not afraid to challenge the status quo.

Success profile

  • A passion for learning and innovating

A lot of what we do is new, so you’ll learn by immersing yourself in the wider community, developing yourself and your team along the way.

  • High quality work

We work in a rapidly changing business, so you’ll need a focus on delivering high quality work at a fast pace. Doing the right thing quickly is good; quick and dirty just won’t cut it.

  • Team player

We have a ‘wade in and help’ mindset in Cyber. You’ll thrive on getting stuck in. You’ll give your own opinions, share your experiences and perspectives, and listen to those of colleagues. In doing so, you’ll learn and help others in the team learn from you.
