Reporting into a Tech Ops Senior Manager, you’ll be responsible for platform support of Capital One’s suite of monitoring, logging and observability software whether hosted in the Capital One Data Centre, Capital One Cloud or SaaS.

As Observability Manager you’ll be responsible for a small team of Capital One staff and a team of vendor supplied engineers in an onshore/offshore model.

This is an engineering manager role, suitable for someone with an interest and experience with observability and monitoring.

What you’ll do

  • Able to provide a consistent, agreed level of service on in scope systems, successfully delivering platform upgrades and changes on time and to budget

  • Ensure resources within the team are deployed for maximum effectiveness and efficiency in the execution of team activities

  • Be a champion for observability, creating awareness of the benefits of increased observability, and providing education on logging and monitoring best practice, and the effective use of existing observability systems

  • Identify and manage service risk for systems in scope

  • Able to manage the budget for the area, and reduce costs where possible

  • Engage with Tech Ops Transition Consultants and Tech Delivery Agile Teams to provide observability input, primarily via design reviews, with the aim that changes to software are transitioned into production with the minimum of disruption to service

  • Engage in activities lead by the Supplier Management Office to manage the relationship with third party system providers for in scope systems, including RFP and contract renewal

  • Provide expert advice to the Tech Ops Management Team on all aspects of observability, including taking part in negotiations on formally agreed service levels.

  • Partnering with counterparts in Enterprise Capital One to develop and implement Capital One’s observability strategy

What we’re looking for

  • Broad experience of observability theory and practice (ideally experience using New Relic)

  • Experience of delivery in an Agile environment

  • Preferred: ITIL Foundation Certificate

  • Experience coaching and managing people
