Senior Site Reliability Engineer - Front End

Sitting at the core of these values is our Software Engineering department, whose primary role is to be an effective enabler of Capital One’s ambitions.We are keen to add a Principal Site Reliability Engineer to our Nottingham based team whose primary focus is to provide effective management of the evolution and reliability of both existing/under development service applications.

This role will act as past of a team of Site Reliability Engineers responsible for maintaining and improving front-end applications for our most critical customer servicing web channels within the cloud.

We’re looking for an experienced professional whose technical skill set lies primarily with technologies/frameworks such as Java and whose passion for software engineering allows them to be a true inspiration to those that they work with on a daily basis, including team members based both on and offshore. AWS is Capital One's hosting platform of choice so your experience of Cloud-based architecture will stand you in good stead.

Our Senior Site Reliability Engineers are people who have the required skills to lead by example and are able to build strong and valuable relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. They have the ability to face into ambiguity and understand how to make sense of complexity.

What you’ll do

  • You will be responsible for maintaining and improving front-end applications for our most critical customer servicing web channels within the cloud.

  • Through hands-on engineering you will help to shape and deliver the goals and vision set out by your Site Reliability Engineering Manager (SREM).

  • Contribute to the major optimisation and improvement themes within the team.  Identifying opportunities to reduce operational overheads through observability and service automation.

  • Improve reliability, quality and compliance of services deployed within AWS.

  • Innovate within your team, initiative area and contribute within your technical domain.

  • Estimate, scope and plan your work within an agile environment.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong proficiency in Javascript with comprehensive knowledge of modern web application frameworks specifically React.js and Node.js

  • Good knowledge of NPM package management

  • Understanding of common Javascript testing frameworks such as Jest, Mocha & Chai.

  • Solid understanding of API authentication and authorisation mechanisms like OAuth.

  • Knowledge using monitoring & logging tools like NewRelic or Logzio to troubleshoot problems in a distributed network of systems.

  • Strong understanding of infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipeline management via Jenkins.

  • Development experience within AWS.

  • Keen interest in Site Reliability Engineering Practices.

  • Experience in front-end architectural and design patterns.

  • Able to effectively communicate and partner across engineering to maximise inner-sourcing opportunities and reduce waste.

  • Strong knowledge to successfully identify, troubleshoot and pre-empt operational issues.

  • Proactive approach to problem determination, identifying areas for improvement and system bottlenecks and driving things to completion.

  • Strong communication skills with proven ability to challenge and motivate technical teams.

  • Previous experience:
    An in date AWS Certification, for example Cloud Practitioner, Associate Architect or Associate Developer

  • Solving real world problems and being comfortable working in a complex regulated environment.

  • Previous experience:

Where and how you'll work

This is a permanent position and is based in our Nottingham Head Office.  

We have a hybrid working model which gives you flexibility to work from our offices and from home. 

We’re big on collaboration and connection, so you’ll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
