Read Lauren’s Story (Software Academy Graduate)

Joined the Software Academy Graduate programme in September 2019. Studied Computer Science at University of York.
I remember discovering software development in an ICT lesson at school when we were learning about powerpoint, but I was more curious about how to create software than how to use it! I started coding in my spare time and enjoyed it so much that I decided to study Computing at A-level. That was when I discovered my love for the challenge and excitement involved in software development and I knew I wanted to pursue it as a career.
I first heard of Capital One when catching up with a friend at university who completed the Software Academy Internship. He had such a positive experience at the company over ten weeks in the summer that he encouraged me to apply for the graduate scheme as he thought I would enjoy it too. After my first visit to the company I knew he was right! I was delighted with how friendly and welcoming everyone was and the focus on a supportive and positive culture at Capital One.
I am currently a web Quality Engineer, which involves working side-by-side with the Software Engineers in my team to code automated tests for our web servicing platform. Quality engineering is a super important role as you are responsible for ensuring a high standard of quality for the features that your team produces so customers have a positive experience with Capital One. I love being a Quality Engineer as it has provided me with the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the platform my team works on and I have a “bigger picture” view of the work my team does.
